NAS for home

I recently bought a very nice Synology DS108J NAS, the NAS has a impressive list of capabilities and most importend for me it’s cheap ;-)
Prices in the Netherlands are arround 120 Euro’s (without disk).
It’s the entry level model of Synology, they have models with better performance and hardware RAID but most of the functionality is the same for all models.
Checkout the comparison list of all models on http://www.synology.com/enu/products/compare_spec.php

Some of the functionalities are:

  • Surveillance Station
  • Photo Station 3
  • File Station
  • Audio Station
  • Web Station
  • PHP/MySQL
  • Download Station
  • iTunes Server

Synology frequently improve the firmware add more features, one off the latest is a NZB and eMule download service.
Performance is ok for me, CIFS writes at 5-6 MBs and reads at 7-8 MBs.

The NAS supports Windows, Linux and Apple and has nice design as you can see on the picture below.
Check it out on http://www.synology.com/enu/index.php

  1. Dear Rob,

    Best wishes for 2009.

    I recently bought a DS 207+.
Main reason to buy is to save electricity because I don’t have to leave the PC on
for the whole day while I use Emule.
I have difficulty using the downloadredirector from Synology to accept the files
I found in Emule, and have them start to download in the redirector.

I obviously must do something wrong, just don’t know what.

    Your help is appriciated.

    Kind regards,
    Jeroen.
