I recently bought a very nice Synology DS108J NAS, the NAS has a impressive list of capabilities and most importend for me it’s cheap 
Prices in the Netherlands are arround 120 Euro’s (without disk).
It’s the entry level model of Synology, they have models with better performance and hardware RAID but most of the functionality is the same for all models.

Synology frequently improve the firmware add more features, one off the latest is a NZB and eMule download service.
Performance is ok for me, CIFS writes at 5-6 MBs and reads at 7-8 MBs.
The NAS supports Windows, Linux and Apple and has nice design as you can see on the picture below.
